Beyond the Grey Forest

(watch your speakers, this track gets loud.)

My memories and thoughts dwindling… dwindling… difficult to focus. I can barely recall the date of this latest diary entry. It’s as if, my every thought is fleeting, my mind a skiff, on a mist covered lake. Drifting deeper into an endless cloud of grey.

A shake of the head momentarily returns me to my senses…

I turn my attention back to the quill and page… my diary. Yes, my diary.

At first it was the record of the ordinary goings and comings in our lands. I took up the ink simply to keep order in my affairs, woe how it has become so much more. For there is a heaviness in our realm. A burden, like the mist, that rolls across us… growing more tangible each day, but somehow, less noticeable.

There is something in its nature that alarms me.

Even now, I struggle for clarity in my words. What was the name of it… think damn you… the village by the river with sprawling fields of gold and violet. Prejagia! Yes, that’s it Prejagia.

I know I’ve written of it before, but I write of it again, if nothing else to refresh the images in my mind.

I visited the humble village only once as a child. During the years when such visits to unknown places leave lasting impressions. A most pleasant town, long before the hardships that have befallen our lands. Such warm and inviting people. Strangers offering foods and talk with genuine compassion for strangers.

I knew Prejagia would be my respite against the grey that now swallows us. A place I could clear my mind and reassemble the pieces…

Is it possible I imagined the whole thing?

A dream?

Wishful thinking?

NO. My mind is not lost, yet…

And so I found myself traveling many days on the road to reach a village that simply no longer exists. A foreboding gnarled forest where joy and prosperity once stood.

Speaking to the locals calls forth no memory of Prejagia, now or ever.

At first I thought it a grand deception, but the further I traveled, the more kinsman I spoke to, all regurtitated the same. They had never visited or even heard of a village name Prejagia in our lands. Turning to maps and books, all written evidence of my childhood fancy had vanished. It was as if Prejagia had never been.

Yet, I can still remember it.

The baker of pies with racks of his wares cooling from the ovens. Children chasing round and round the village well. Dogs catching organ meat as the butcher carved his game. Prejagia was no childhood illusion.

How could an entire village disappear?

And if we do not awake from this numbing slumber that encroaches upon us, what next will vanish from us?

What else already has?

Now, I turn my quill to write which send the hairs on the back of my neck to rise.

I swear upon all that’s holy, some force works against my efforts to record this journal. I have placed the journal down beside a campfire and a moment later found it three paces away. Pages have gone missing, ripped from the book.

I have no explanation.

Like Prejagia itself, it’s as if something works to erase me from existence. I take solace in writing with even greater frequency and as of late, leaving behind pages deep in the trunks of twisted black beech trees wherever I travel. If the journal is ever taken from me, perhaps the pages I leave in hiding can help me remember what is lost… before it’s too late.

Though you know not the author, the feelings he describes strike an uncanny accord… as though a most similar letter could have come from your very own hand.

This journal entry is the introduction to the campaign setting, it frames only a glimpse of the actual active story. I’ve got a few more things to add to it, plus I’ll be linking the setting map so players can orientate themselves. Additional setting content, villages, people, lore, etc. will all be shared as its completed.

COPYRIGHT NOTICE

By playing in one of my games you agree to wave all rights to any story material generated on your behalf. I may test active story material from a video game, comic, book, etc. and I need this release so none of the material gets locked up by anyone. I’m not using the games to farm ideas, but you never know, something cool may spring up that makes its way into one of my active projects.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

  • 5th Edition D&D.

  • Start at level 1.

  • This game is for a group from 4 to 6 players.

  • This is a Pay-to-Play game.

GAMEPLAY DETAILS

  • This campaign will start out fairly typical of most adventures. Over the course of the campaign prepare yourself for a downward spiral into a true nightmarish horror. This is survival horror at its finest. How bad it gets and who survives along with you, all hinge on the choices YOU make.

  • The campaign emphasizes creative problem-solving & strategic thinking, teamwork, diverse skill sets, and resource management.

  • Expect to dive into exploration, forge meaningful relationships, engage in diplomacy or deception, assess threats, and strategically manage resources.

  • I’m a die-hard horror fan and this table will most certainly get graphic at times. If the idea of playing through Evil Dead or Hellraiser disturbs you, you will not have fun here. That said, I’m not into torture porn horror. My goal isn’t to constantly hit you over the head with body mutilation and splatter for shock value engagement.

  • There is no session 0. You guys are getting thrown right into the shit. Our exciting adventure together starts the minute the campaign opens.

PC CREATION

  • Starting Level: 1st.

  • Stats: No restrictions.

  • Races: Common accepted. Rare or special races must be approved.

  • Classes & Sub-Classes: No restrictions.

  • Alignment: No restrictions, but no alignments can be used against the party. PCs that work to undermine the party for their own reasons/disruptive players will be kicked.

  • Players are expected to come to the table with a finished character in hand. All characters are to be approved before the first session. I am reachable via discord or email.

  • Conceptualize your character under any campaign details I share, otherwise, just use the premise of a generic Gothic Horor setting. When you share your character info, I’ll make any suggestions for background, skills, ability adjustments, etc.

  • I’m generally open to customizations, as long as they are in the spirit of creating a more interesting, playable character and NOT in the spirit of stacking rules or breaking mechanics.

WARNINGS

  • The goal of playing an RPG is to have fun, period. If you come to the table, be OK with folks not always being perfect, sometimes saying or doing the wrong thing. Everyone who comes to my table should have the goal of swiftly moving past any problems or issues, so the game does not suffer.

  • There are no mature themes baked into the cake, BUT as an adult, improv material will certainly contain bad language and may contain adult themes.

  • No safe spaces. If you are triggered to the point where the entire game is spoiled if “something” comes up, this is not the table for you. If the wrong pronoun is gonna piss you off, especially when said accidentally, this table is not for you. This is a casual, fun table.

  • Everyone is welcome. Every player gets a fair shake. Veterans are encouraged to actively help noobs. Veterans are encouraged not to dominate over noobs.

  • This is a pay-to-play game: If players don’t pay, the game goes away. It’s that simple. Please don’t spoil it for everyone by not paying or asking for more time to pay… I’m not a loan shark, yo.

  • Meta-game at your own risk, because you know, I’m the DM and make the rules.
