Every once in a while I see a script where the writer has something like;
Panel 1: yadda yadda yadaa
Panel 2: Same as panel 1 BUT “slight change that doesn’t have much to do about anything”
Panel 3: Same as the other two, BUT “another slight change, I just really like this panel setup”
Keep in mind any time you’re running similar panel setups back to back, you’re setting up a “potential road block”.
Similar panel setups can have a very static affect, breaking the reader’s engagement in the story.
They can also throw the page off visually and complicate an otherwise straight forward page… For example, let’s say your page requires 6 panels, 2 over 2 over 2 and you set up 3 similar panels. Got it?
Generally, reserve similar panel setups for showing the passage of time or a specific action/movement. If you’re doing them for something else, stop and make sure it’s necessary to the story.▪
